Development Update #1 - Prototyping

Hey there! 👋

This'll be the first of many development updates that will be posted. While primarily focusing on the things we're doing up to the release of the server, I'll probably continue writing these post-launch.

For a little bit of an introduction of myself and this server, I'm Odogo, the server's only developer and Owner. I've been attempting to help develop Minecraft servers for a few years with some success, but mostly flops due to a lack of management. I've decided to take matters into my own hands and manage and develop my own server, which is this.

But, to start, let's begin with what Foxavis is.

Kingdoms

The main focus of this server is to revive a niche type of servers called "Towny Factions", and this is where we start with Kingdoms. Kingdoms is our twist on Towny Factions, which introduces a plentiful amount of mechanics we'll keep silent while we work on them. (I say we, but I'm the only developer on the team LOL)

However, as anything goes, we need a way for these kingdoms to stake their claim on land and to house members within. Designing this took an ungodly amount of time that I won't get into, but it's finally in a position where we can start prototyping and testing the current system. While things may seem very simplistic, that's very intentional to prototype things in a sorta "unfinished" state. It makes things easier to modify, change, or completely overhaul, if it's needed.

Completing Prototyping

Once this phase of prototyping is successful, kingdoms will begin to have a lot more features, ranging from a full transactional bank system to relationships between other kingdoms and going to war. However, some of these may be far out from where we currently are.

Some non-kingdoms, but related features that will be worked on after prototyping, are our market system. We're planning on making the server's economy mostly player-run, and with this, we need to give you the ability to create your own shops. For this, we'll use NPC shops that you can summon anywhere, and players can find them within your kingdom or within other kingdoms that have permitted you to set up shop.

To find other players' shops, we will create a directory both in-game and on our website to find what you're looking for and where it's located.

"What about raiding?"

While I like Factions as much as the next person, I don't like how it's become. I'd much prefer our players to build beautiful structures, buildings, and castles rather than build obsidian bricks covered in sand, lava, and water on the corner of the map in the abyss of sky. While we're still designing how raiding will work, as it's pretty integral, we've decided that TNT cannons and TNT raiding are not allowed. We want to encourage you to build amazing structures, and having them be at risk of blowing up is a primary reason that these obsidian bricks exist.

To remind you, this is "Towny Factions", not just Factions. We're not deceiving you into this being Factions if you wanted that experience.

We'll post another update about how we're handling raiding and how kingdom-vs-kingdom combat will occur, as it deserves its own topic of discussion.

Conclusion

However, these things are steps beyond where we are currently in the development phase. There's only one person who's building this server's mechanics from the ground up (hello!), which takes a lot of time to design and program these things into existence.

While putting a deadline on things is my tragic downfall, a rough estimate of our beta release is late December to early January of next year, but nothing is currently rock solid, and I fully expect this estimate to change.

Until then, I'll see you in the next post!

~ Odogo

(Also, this is my first time writing any "development updates" in a hot minute, so please forgive the weird wording or other mistakes. I'll get better the more these happen!)
